this year the somerset grocer was lucky enough to be nominated for the cafe of the year award in the Ashburton district.
on the 7th of october we went to the awards ceremony at the Ashburton Event Centre hoping for the best outcome, and after many other awards were given out we were excited to see who had won our category, cafe of the year, and to our delight our name came up on the screen, we had WON!!
we are very pleased with the result, after only being open for the last 18 months we are happy with our achievement and it is great to be recognised by our peers.
we would like to thank everyone who voted and our long standing customers who we see everyday.
below is a letter from Janine Sundberg the Executive Officer for the Ashburton Business Association, outlining what was required and how we achieved the winning award

"Congratulations to The Somerset Grocer for being voted ABA Ashburton District Café of the Year for 2011.
Almost 4,500 people took the trouble to vote for their favourite café this year and The Somerset Grocer received the highest number of votes.
The Peoples’ Choice Award categories for Café of the Year, Top Shop and Customer Service Person of the Year also all contained a mystery shopping component, which made up 50% of the final outcome in each of the three categories.
Each café was visited by two mystery shoppers during the final three weeks of voting and they judged each finalist on
• Coffee quality / Barista skills
• Food
• Ambience
• Customer Service
• Unique characteristics of café
The Somerset Grocer also scored highest in this section of the Café of the Year Award.
Competition in the Café of the Year Award was very strong and it is clear that there are a number of excellent cafes in our District which receive loyal support from the public.
Congratulations once again to The Somerset Grocer team for their success in this year’s Café of the Year Award."
